September is Coming! ...and so is National Preparedness Month
What is "preparedness"? What constitutes "being prepared"?
It's not just stuff we accumulate for those "what if" events. It's not the compass, the headlamp, or the cool survival gadget purchased years ago then tossed into a box labeled "emergency" never to be looked at again. Well, that's not entirely true...I rediscovered that box a few months back as I was clearing out and packing up for my move to California. The hoarder in me was calling out, but I decided that I'd make a fresh start and save myself the shipping costs.
The truth is that we all have some version of that "box of stuff" that we put together once and cross our fingers that we'll never need it. What good are these supplies if we don't maintain them, don't know how to use them, don't keep them easily accessible?
Preparedness is about readiness. And it doesn't need to be an elaborate process that's overly time-consuming or expensive. In fact, the best options are often those that can be incorporated into our daily lives, not just stuff we stick in a box and never use.
So where do we get started and how can we make preparedness a part of our everyday lifestyle?
Throughout September (National Preparedness Month) I hope you'll join me in the quest to get more prepared. Each week, we'll spotlight a different topic around preparedness and include useful tips, resources, and opportunities to earn prizes that get you one step closer to your preparedness goals!
So get ready! September is coming!
